Reef Naturalist Days - Reef Teach, Cairns

The Reef Naturalist experience gives you the opportunity to snorkel or dive (certified divers only) the Great Barrier Reef, expertly guided by your very own Marine Biologist and Master Reef Guide.

Depending on your chosen trip duration (1, 2, 3, 4 days), you'll be spending time in up to three different locations on the GBR and actively participate in several research and conservation activities, whilst learning more about every aspect of the Reef and it's inhabitants.

You wont find a better way to enjoy your time in the water on the Great Barrier Reef and get up close and personal with one of the most amazing eco-systems in the world.

In line with current Government and Health alert recommendations and to protect our customers and staff, Reef Teach have decided to temporarily suspend all public and group services, for future bookings we are still accepting "Expressions of Interest" through our contact and booking forms and will contact you at a later date to organise your visit.

Reef Teach offer a flexible approach to your experience with a number of available activities and durations to suit your needs and travel itinerary. Get the most out of your time on the Great Barrier Reef with a 1, 2, 3 or 4 day Reef Naturalist experience;

    Option 1 (Recommended)

    Reef Teach Visitor Talk

    Includes our 2 hour evening Reef Teach Talk (Monday, Wednesay & Friday evenings), normally prior to your GBR trip, depending on your availability and travel itinery.

    Full Day Outer Reef Trip

    Two in-water sessions, with both the morning and afternoon sessions focussing on survey participation and taking in the best of what the GBR has to offer.

    On the return trip, particpants will prepare and enter their survey data and sightings in to the system, adding to the on-going research and conservation of the Great Barrier Reef.

    Option 2

    Full Day Outer Reef Trip

    Two in-water sessions, with both the morning and afternoon sessions focussing on survey participation and taking in the best of what the GBR has to offer.

    On the return trip, particpants will prepare and enter their survey data and sightings in to the system, adding to the on-going research and conservation of the Great Barrier Reef.

    Reef Teach Talk Not Included, if your schedule does not allow attendance of our Reef Teach talk prior to your GBR trip.

    Option 1 (Recommended)

    Full Day At Continental Island With Fringing Reef

    Two in-water sessions, with the morning sessions designed to build confidence and become familier with marine identification and reef surveying, as well as taking in the natural beauty of your surroundngs.

    Your afternoon session focusses more on practicing the survey techniques and preparing for the following days excursion activities.

    Option 2

    Full Day GBR Introduction Seminar

    Through a series of fun and interactive presentations you will learn how to identify the most common species of fish and corals and will develop the background knowledge to put these skills into practice on the following days in-water sessions at the reef.

    Topics Covered: Introduction to the Reef (formation and history), Reef management, fish and invertebrate identification, and different citizen science survey techniques.

    Day Two

    Full Day Outer Reef Trip

    Two in-water sessions, with both the morning and afternoon sessions focussing on survey participation and taking in the best of what the GBR has to offer.

    Day Four

    Full Day Outer Reef Trip

    Two in-water sessions, with both the morning and afternoon sessions focussing on survey participation and taking in the best of what the GBR has to offer.

    On the return trip, particpants will prepare and enter their survey data and sightings in to the system, adding to the on-going research and conservation of the Great Barrier Reef.

Swimming Requirements

Moderate Snorkeler & Certified Diver
Young children are welcome, but again they must have strong swimming abilities

What You Can Expect

Your days on the reef will begin at the marina with a short safety briefing and you'll be on your way. Once on-board your Marine Biologist will explain what you can expect in the water and how you can get the best from each day.

Your Reef Naturalist experience includes;

  • Entrance to the Reef Teach Evening Talk (if included in your selected experience)
  • Passage to and from the selected reef location(s)
  • Snorkel gear and everything needed to successfully complete surveys and signtings.
  • Morning tea on the way to the reef
  • Full briefing on the way to the reef by your Marine Biologist
  • Two in-water sessions guided by your Marine Biologist
  • On-Board Tropical Buffet lunch
  • Afternoon tea on the way back home
  • Full debriefing on the days events and sightings
